The Board seeks members who have the time, energy, and inclination to serve our mission and help set our strategic direction. Based on the board’s assessment of its needs for diversity of thought, experience, and expertise, they will select candidates to be presented to the members for affirmation.
The Board is made up of a Chair, four election zone seats and four appointed “At Large” seats. The CEO, past chair, and the National Board Representative also participate in Board meetings. Board members may serve a maximum of two three-year terms either consecutively or not.
Our Board of Directors is sized to be efficient. It does require all members to actively participate. It will require time and travel. The time involved is typically more unevenly skewed based on our more involved meetings or periods when your committee(s) are busiest. Listed below are the approximate number of hours and duties you likely will be committing to. This is an unpaid position.
- Two in person meetings per year (40 hours plus travel)
- Two or three virtual meetings per year (6-9 hours)
- Service on two committees (8-15 hours)
- Board work via email (10 hours)
- Board required reading (12 hours)
- Member outreach (4 hours)
- Total: approximately 90 hours over 12 months comes to an average of 7.5 hours per month
All candidates will be vetted by the sitting board. Finally, in May the membership will vote to affirm or decline the slate of at-large nominees endorsed and proposed by the Eastern Board of Directors. Newly appointed, and affirmed, Board members will begin their first term at the June Board Meeting.
Eligible candidates must be a certified level I, II or III member in their fourth year of continuous membership to be qualified to serve on the Board of Directors. No full-time, year-round employee of the Association may hold a position on the Board of Directors. This includes full-time office staff and year-round discipline coordinators. The maximum representation of Education Staff on the Board is 50% of the total seats.
